While much of the talk at the recent Money 20/20 was about Apple Pay vs. MCX, and there is some great footage as evidence of this, a large segment of issuers and other players in the market were wondering how to get out from under the network’s stranglehold on electronic payments. On multiple occasions I heard, “Nobody wants to pay the networks.” Couple this desire to be rid of the oligarchical practices of the major credit networks with the rise of alternative payments, and you just might have the means to bring about the end of processing as we know it.
